If you have a Veteran’s Administration disability rating for a service-connected condition, you can draw 100% of both VA benefits and Social Security disability. However, if your VA disability rating is for non-service connected conditions, you draw a non-service connected pension, and you are granted Social Security disability, your VA pension is reduced dollar-for-dollar by the amount of your Social Security disability, retroactive to the date that the SSA determines that you were eligible for SSDI, even if SSA backdates your claim. This sometimes results in veterans owing the VA for the overpayment they may have received because of the backdate. I would advise getting the advice of an attorney who is knowledgeable in Social Security Disability and also VA pensions.
