SSI disability is a need-based program, meaning that it is available only to low-income people. If your income is more than the income limit being used, then you will not be considered eligible for SSI.
The income limit is based on the federal benefit rate, which is $674 for 2011. However, if you state pays an extra supplement to its SSI recipients, than the income limit in your state includes that supplement. For instance, if your state pays an $100 to all SSI recipients, then income limit for SSI in your state would be $774.
When your income is counted, however, you are allowed to make certain deductions and exclude part of your income. Learn more about what income is countable for SSI purposes.
