Just a few years ago, I dreaded being the first person to tell a new client just how long it would take to get a hearing before a judge.  From the date the appeal was filed, claimant's were waiting 18 to 24 months  - some were waiting even longer.

Social Security took action, and we're finally starting to feel the impact on a more regular basis.  In Southeast Michigan, a new ODAR (hearing office) was opened in Livonia this fall.  I've already had several clients' hearings scheduled less than 12 months after filing the appeal.  Although I'm not ready to expect 6-8 month wait periods, I am fairly comfortable with estimating about 12-15 months.  I'd rather pleasantly surprise my client with a hearing scheduled "early" than promise something I clearly cannot guarantee.

Initial applications are generally taking 3-4 months to process and produce a determination.  I filed 2 in April, and both clients were awarded benefits in July/August.

It appears the processing time for benefit payments has lessened as well.  While some clients are still waiting 6-8 weeks for monthly benefits, many receive them in 4-6 weeks.  I've actually had clients receive the lump sum past-due benefit check within days of receiving the award determination!

Finally, some change.  Finally, some good change.  And I'm happy to report it!
