You can claim permanent partial disability benefits if you are abstained to do your original work because of the disability caused by an injury or a medical condition. You may be able to do some other work, but still you are provided with this permanent partial disability (PPD) benefit in order to compensate for the reduction in income due to partial disability.

What is Permanent Partial Disability Benefit?

Social Security Administration of the US has established two federal programs, namely, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Secuirty Income (SSI), in order to help disabled persons financially. If you fall under either one of the categories of temporary total disability or permanent partial disability, then you can claim for these benefits. When your disability has reached a state where further improvement is not possible then it is regarded as a PPD and you can file a claim of PPD benefit.

Eligibility for PPD Benefit

  • An injury at work place can keep you away from going to work. After taking medical treatment, if you become fit to go for work but you are unable to do all your duties completely, then you are eligible for the PPD benefit claim as your disability is regarded as a permanent one. If this has to be explained in insurance language, then PPD benefit can be claimed at the end of the temporary total disability.
  • Even if you return to work, you are eligible to PPD benefit if you are unable to perform your original job. PPD benefit is issued on the basis of degree of impairment.
  • You become eligible for PPD benefit after you have undergone maximum possible treatment for the correction or improvisation of the injury. An Independent Medical Examination rates your impairment on the basis of degree of impairment. This rating will determine the benefit amount payable to you.
  • If your disability rating is between 1% and 99%, then you can claim PPD benefit. Types of occupation, degree of impairment, and reduction of earning capacity life long are the factors taken into consideration while determining the disability rating.
  • The present condition of the disability should have resulted solely due to the injury at work place to become eligible for the PPD benefit. This means that if the injury has re-aggravated during the claims filing period, then employer or insurer will not be compensating for this degree of impairment.
