Long term disability benefits can be tricky to figure out. The rules can vary depending on the entity through which you have benefits. Many people have employer funded benefits. Other people may be eligible for government benefits if they do not have an employer plan in place.

Long term disability benefits are designed to replace a part of your income if you are unable to work for an extended period because of an accident or sickness. Unlike Workers' Compensation benefits, the accident or sickness does not have to occur due to your work.

Other Income

If you are receiving other sources of income, it may effect how much you will receive from your long term disability insurer. The following sources of income can effect your claim depending on your particular policy:

  • Short term disability;
  • Workers’ Compensation;
  • Social Security Income;
  • Certain pension plans; and
  • Other group long term disability benefits.

Determining Eligibility

Your plan administrator will have rules as to whom is eligible to collect long term disability benefits. The following is a list of factors your carrier will look at in making its determination as to your claim:

  • Whether you are unable to do your job due to illness or injury.
  • The length of time your injury or illness is expected to last. Long term usually is defined as 12 or more months.
  • Whether you have other income or are physically and mentally able to do other work to replace lost income. If you can work, but your income would be reduced, you may be eligible for partial disability.
