A circulatory disease is a medical condition that has adversely affected an individual’s heart and the blood system in some way as in cardiovascular disease or it can be a dysfunction of the heart and lungs and blood such as a cardiopulmonary disease.  Examples of cardiovascular disease are systemic hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and rheumatic heart disease.  There are a long, long list of conditions that are included under this particular category of disease and each one will have its own specific adverse results in the body function which could result in a severe and debilitating disability that would render an individual suffering from that condition eligible for disability benefits under the Social Security Disability Insurance program or the Supplemental Security Income program under the Social Security administration.

Cardiovascular Impairments

The Social Security covers disorders that affect the proper functioning of the heart and the circulatory system such as the veins, capillaries and lymphatic drainage system such as chronic heart failure or ventricular dysfunction, pain due to myocardial ischemia with or without necrosis of the heart muscle, syncope due to inadequate cerebral perfusion from any cardiac cause from an obstruction or disturbance of the cardiac output.  This category of impairment can also include vein or artery problems such as aneurysms, impairments of lower extremities like peripheral vascular disease and conditions involving the central nervous system such as the eyes, kidneys and other organs due to a cardiovascular condition.  This category can even involve people who are in a pre-heart transplant condition.

Eligibility for Disability Benefits

If you think that you have a circulatory disease that had resulted in a disability that has rendered you eligible for benefits under a Social Security administration program it may be important to consider the basic requirement that must be met by all applicants applying for benefits based on a disability.  First an adult applicant must be able to provide medical evidence of the circulatory disease diagnosis and then he or she must be able to evidence through medical reports and documentation that the condition is severe enough in an adult to prevent the applicant from engaging in gainful employment and in a child severe enough to prevent the child from functioning to perform daily tasks on a level commensurate with non-disabled children his age.

Getting Legal Help

If you or your child has been diagnosed with a severe circulatory disease that has resulted in a severely disabling condition and you would like to apply for Social Security program benefits it would be helpful to discuss the diagnosis and condition with a disability lawyer.
