Sometimes a Social Security administration program will stop an individual’s disability benefits when his condition is adjudged to have improved to the extent that he would be able to work or if a person himself goes back to work and is no longer disabled by the medical condition.  In some cases the disabling condition can deteriorate back to a level where the person is once again unable to perform gainful employment.  The Social Security Disability Insurance program and the Supplemental Security Income program both have a way to get back on benefits fast called, “expedited reinstatement.”

Expedited Reinstatement

Expedited reinstatement of disability benefits is available for certain applicants.  A request can be made to have benefits start again without having to complete a new application for benefits.  The Social Security administration program will re-determine whether benefits can again be approved and while they are making that second determination they will approve the applicant for a temporary or provisional period to receive disability benefits of up to six months.  The temporary disability benefits can include cash payments and Medicare or Medicaid coverage for immediate medical expenses.  The temporary benefits awarded do not usually have to be paid back if the claim is denied for some reason.

An individual may be eligible to receive expedited reinstatement of his disability benefits if he meets the requirements below:

  • His previous entitlement for benefits was terminated due to becoming gainfully employed or because the person had too much income to be eligible for benefits,
  • The applicant is not working and does not have too much income at the time he applied for an expedited reinstatement of benefits,
  • The applicant is unable to work due to a disabling medical condition,
  • Current medical impairments are the same or substantially related to the originally claimed disabling condition and
  • The request for expedited reinstatement of disability benefits is made within five years from the month that the original disability benefits were terminated.
