Mobility allowance has greatly improved in the United States over the last few decades.  There are disabled people who are now able to drive thanks to specially equipped cars and vans.  Most establishments, including retail stores, restaurants, and hospitals, will accommodate those who need wheelchairs to move.  Public transportation also provides accommodations for disabled people.  Even disabled people’s homes are now easily able to accommodate them, with wheelchair ramps entering into the home and newer homes being constructed to allow for easier access for them.

U.S. Programs that Provide Mobility Allowance

The United States provides two programs that allow for mobility allowance for the disabled:  the U.S. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and the U.S. Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The SSDI is directly funded by the Social Security Trust Fund and requires those who receive it to pass a long application process first, greatly based on work credits that he/she has accumulated over his/her life.

The SSI is funded by the U.S. Treasury Fund and does not require work credits in order to receive it.  Only a demonstration of need due to disability is required to receive this.

Advocacy groups that stem from these programs continue to advocate for better policies and legislation that will improve the lives of the disabled.  This is partly responsible for the advancements in technology and policies that have enabled the disabled to live more productive lives in the last few decades.

Advancements in the Lives of the Disabled in the U.S.

Advancements in technology and in consideration for the disabled have led to better living conditions for them.  Newer homes are being built to accommodate those who are disabled by allowing greater space for wheelchairs that are required for the disabled to move freely.  Older homes are having wheelchair ramps installed so that the disabled can more easily enter and exit their homes on their own.

The disabled are more easily able to account for their own needs by utilizing automobiles and vans that have been equipped with devices and/or configured in a way so that they can operate them by themselves to get where they need to go without assistance from others.  Public transportation such as buses and airplanes now also account for disabled passengers.

Restaurants, movie theaters, sporting stadiums, and other public places have been built to account for the disabled, as now there is more room for wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices to aid the people who need those devices to move around freely without being restricted.
