Property Tax Break Offered to Texas Veterans

July 30, 2009

In June, Governor Rick Perry of Texas signed a new law, saying that all American veterans severely injured on or before January 1 of this year are either exempt from their property taxes or will receive a significant break.

Those veterans who are currently receiving 100 percent disability compensation will not have to pay any property taxes. Those who receive 30, 50 or 70 percent will have varying levels of exemption. Many have expressed relief, saying that they often struggle to make ends meet and to provide for their families.

Some veterans are unable to pay off credit card debt, fail to make mortgage payments and face bankruptcy. They are not able to work because many are handicapped after their experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan or any other operation of the military.

Unfortunately, the tax break cannot be applied to those soldiers who were injured before the beginning of this year- in an effort to reduce the strain on the state government.
