President Expected to Sign Disability Rights Treaty
July 23, 2009
In 2007, a treaty became available for countries to sign, which supported rights for disabled citizens of the world. On Friday, President Barack Obama is expected to announce that he will sign the treaty, known as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
During his campaign, Obama said that he supported the treaty, which is comprised of more than 100 countries that support the efforts of the United Nations. The organization is trying to break down the barriers that exist for disabled people around the world and to provide community access and employment opportunities.
It is estimated that more than 650 million people worldwide live with some form of disability. The treaty will be a form of international agreement to better the quality of life for these individuals.
Obama’s announcement will coincide with the 19th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. White House aides have confirmed his decision. After the treaty is signed, it will be sent to the Senate for review.
