Mental disability affects millions of people each year. Varying degrees and types of mental disability determine whether or not a person is eligible for social security benefits and insurance. Even if a person is mentally ill to the extent that they cannot provide care for themselves nor live alone, they may still be eligible for social security benefits and. If you are caring for a person with a mental illness, changes are they are eligible; you just need to apply to receive the benefit and insurance.

Mental Disability

Mental disability can be the result of a closed head injury, damage to the brain during surgery, aging or a variety of other scenarios. Some mental disabilities are short term as the brain works to heal itself. Other injuries are permanent, irreversible and cannot be treated but instead are medicated. Some of the most severe forms of mental disability require 24-hour supervised care and a number of medications to keep the mentally disabled person stable and from hurting themselves. A mental disability is not a death sentence but it is a major responsibility for the person or staff who have to provide care for them.

Some mentally disabled individuals are also physically disabled and cannot feed themselves, provide for their own hygiene or community effective with others to let people know of their wants and needs. A person who is this mentally disabled will generally require care that expensive and continuous. Without question, such a person is eligible for disability coverage and insurance to help fray the costs

When You Apply

When you apply for disability benefits and insurance for someone who is mentally ill, the application process is just the start:

  • Check the status of your application regularly.
  • Expect to be able to prove that their illness merits social security benefits and insurance
  • Do not attempt to apply for benefits for someone whom you do not provide care for.
  • You can expect a medical assessment for the person who is mentally ill.
  • Understand your rights and the rights of the person who is mentally ill that you are caring for.
  • Never provide false information on an application as it will be grounds for your case not being approved.

People who are mentally ill often cannot provide any care for themselves. Social security benefits provide for their needs to qualified representatives who help the mentally ill take their medication, go on outings, eat, and other needs, depending on the degree of illness the person is suffering from. Whether the mental disability is a mild one that only requires some supervision or it is a severe one, mental disability insurance is available to help care for the mentally disabled who cannot care for themselves.
