Question:

How many days can I be paid for a short-term pregnancy disability, and at what percentage of my salary?

Answer: (1)

Because the federal government does not mandate pregnancy disability benefits, you’ll need to check your company’s policy, as coverage varies. If your company provides disability insurance, you can typically collect pregnancy and childbirth disability payments for the six to eight weeks. Five states--New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, California, and Hawaii -- also pay six weeks of pregnancy disability insurance to women unable to work because of pregnancy or childbirth. Since most disability policies pay only part of your salary (usually 50-60%), it might also be worth looking into additional private disability insurance to increase your short-term coverage to 80 or 90 percent. For more information, schedule a consultation with an attorney who is experienced in short term disability laws.
