I am having gastric bypass surgery at the end of this month because I can barely work since I am so overweight. I am wondering if it is possible for me to get short-term disability for gastric bypass surgery?

Social security does not offer any form of short-term disability, regardless of the condition, so if you are able to get short-term disability for gastric bypass surgery, it will be from a private insurance company. Your job may provide you with these benefits, so you should check with your human resources department to determine whether you have short-term disability insurance through work and, if so, whether it covers you fro the surgery. If you do not, you can purchase short term disability insurance for yourself, however the policy may not cover the surgery since it is already planned and/or make have exclusions for such surgeries, so make sure you ask your insurance agent before purchasing a policy. You can also contact a disability attorney who can help you to determine your rights under the law and help you determine if there are any benefits you can legally qualify for.
