Question:

I'm a disabled veteran. Can I get social security benefits?

Answer:

According to the Social Security Administration, veterans benefits can be obtained via disability claims with the Social Security Administration. The disability benefits received are different from the traditional veterans benefits a disabled military service member can receive from the Veterans Administration. The process will require submission of a disability application to the Social Security Administration, but for veterans only, the process is expedited greatly. An important note for veterans, however, is that receipt of other benefits, whether from the Veteran’s Administration or even from active duty military pay, does not necessarily preclude a veteran from receiving social security disability benefits.

In order to obtain benefits, a veteran must be eligible per the administrative standards in place for all SSDI applicants, including meeting the disability criteria and exhibiting sufficient inability to engage in substantial gainful activity. However, as mentioned above, the application and claims process for veterans is significantly expedited. Any veteran considering filing a claim for SSDI should actively seek out the necessary legal insight to prepare and file his or her claim with the SSA. These benefits can be received in addition to a wide number of other benefits offered to veterans from a significant number of federal and even state programs. For more information and specific insight into your eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits, consult with a disability lawyer who has experience in handling disability claims involving military service members.
