Question:

How can I prove that I have PTSD for disability benefits?

Answer:

Disability benefits are available from the Social Security Administration only for those with a disability listed in the blue book of impairments or for those who can prove their disability is as severe as those in the blue book and that it prevents them from holding down a job to produce income.

PTSD can qualify you for disability benefits, but only if you can prove that:

  • Your PTSD has or is expected to last for a long term period of time. SSA disability is not for short term problems. If you are expected to get better or you do get better in less than a 2 year period of time, you may not be eligible for SSA disability
  • Your PTSD actually prevents you from working. It must be severe enough to prevent you from doing your job that you had before, or any other job for which you are qualified. You generally also have to prove that the PTSD impairs you from doing many of the basic daily activities required

The best way to prove that you actually have PTSD and that you actually are impaired enough by it to qualify for SSA benefits is to collect solid medical evidence in the form of detailed records from a psychiatrist or psychologist. You may also wish to keep a journal of how your PTSD is hindering you and a record of events and incidents, such as flashbacks triggered by your PTSD. The more information you have to prove that you really are affected, the better your chances of getting benefits.

You may also wish to consult with an experienced lawyer who can assist you in proving your case to the SSA when you make your claim.
