Social Security offers long-term disability benefits, but that does not necessarily mean permanent. All people receiving disability benefits must have their medical conditions reviewed periodically by Social Security. If there is strong evidence that your condition has improved medically and that you are able to return to work, your disability benefits may cease.
How often your case will be reviewed by Social Security depends upon the severity of your medical condition and the likelihood of improvement. If your condition is expected to get better, your first medical review will probably be within the first six to 18 months of receiving benefits. If there is some chance for improvement, your medical condition will be reviewed every three years. If improvement is not expected, your case will be reviewed once every five to seven years. If you are receiving disability benefits when you reach full retirement age under Social Security law, your disability payments will automatically be converted to retirement benefits.
