Can I get disability benefits for panic attacks?

I have been suffering from an anxiety disorder since high school, and I often experience sever panic attacks that make it difficult to do my job. Lately, the panic attacks have become so intense and frequent that I almost have to avoid talking to anyone at work. My manager has asked what's going on, and he says that my lack of engagement is becoming a problem and affecting my performance.  I've tried medications, mostly antidepressants, but none seem to work well and they all have very bad side-effects. If I should lose my job over this, is it possible to get disability benefits until I am able to figure this out?

Social security disability insurance covers anxiety disorders that prevent employees from performing their job. Keep in mind, proving your medical condition is difficult and you will likely be denied disability coverage after your initial claim. You may appeal at several levels, beginning with a request for reconsideration.

Anxiety disorders such as panic attacks are covered in the list of impairments specified by the Social Security Administration, but even so, more than 70% of applicants will initially be denied.

It may be helpful to talk to a disability lawyer BEFORE you file your first claim, in order to get the process done faster so you're not without income while you work to treat your disorder. In most cases, the legal fees can be covered by SSDI, so it's in your best interest to have professional legal counsel, espescially if you have to go up in front of the judge.
