Question:

What benefits does the SSA offer for disabled people?

Answer:

Social security offers disability benefits through two programs: the Social Security disability insurance program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. The Social Security disability insurance program is for those who have worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes, while Supplemental Security Income is for those who are disabled, demonstrate financial need, have a limited work history, and may or may not have paid Social Security taxes.

Sometimes family members of disabled individuals can also get benefits from Social Security.  These family members may include a spouse who is age 62 or older; a spouse of any age that is caring for a child of the disabled person who is younger than age 16 or is disabled themselves; a disabled person’s unmarried child, adopted child, stepchild or grandchild under age 18; and an unmarried child, age 18 or older, who has a disability that started before age 22.
