Question:

What is the SSI program for disability?

Answer:

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal disability program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). SSI is given to low-income individuals and families who are disabled, blind or over 65 years of age. The money covers basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. Although administered through the SSA, the program is not funded with Social Security taxes but is funded with general tax revenues.

Disability Payments - Presumptive Disability

Applying for SSI can actually cut the waiting time for those who have applied for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. SSA pays presumptive disability payments to those waiting to be approved for disability income through SSI who are more than likely to be approved for benefits. The SSI payments provide immediate disability income.

SSA considers someone presumptively disabled based on the likelihood that the claimant meets SSA’s criteria for a disabling condition. While evidence is being considered before a final decision is made, SSA expedites payment to ease the wait for financial relief the claimant needs.

SSA provides a list of presumptive disability impairments on its website. However, this list is not exhaustive. Other severe medical conditions may be considered with enough evidence proving that the problem is as severe and disabling as an SSA qualifying condition.

Who Qualifies for Presumptive Disability?

Presumptive disability payments are available only to first-time SSI claimants with a medical condition that likely meets the SSA definition of a disability. Income levels are also determining factors for final approval of disability benefits. These payments are temporary, however. They start within the month someone becomes disabled and last only for six months.
