Question:

I want to file for social security disability benefits since I am unable to work. Does social security approve claims for scoliosis?

Answer:

While scoliosis is not officially mentioned on the SSA's list of disabilities, you can get benefits if the case is severe enough to keep you from working. In fact, the SSA does not usually care what medical issue you have, as long as it prevents you from supporting yourself. However, the majority of mild cases of scoliosis are not considered deserving of disability benefits because this condition does not tend to keep people from working. Of course, the severest form of scoliosis makes it painful to walk, stand, or even sit, which is why some people cannot earn a living and do in fact need disability benefits. If your case is severe, you need to show the SSA that you cannot work at any type of job due to this condition. An administrative law judge will go over your application to determine if you qualify for disability benefits, which means that you must explain clearly why you cannot work. You are required to supplement your application with medical records that show that you have been to a doctor for the condition, and nothing has helped. The SSA will need to see that you have tried medication, surgery, physical therapy, or other possible solutions, to no avail. Your doctor should write a letter describing your condition, explaining why it renders you unable to work. Be sure to include any other impairments that you have, as long as they also impact your daily life. Additionally, you will need to include your pay stubs from any recent jobs to show that you do not make enough to support yourself, and thus need disability benefits just to pay your bills.
