Question:

Why is it so complicated to win SSDI benefits?

Answer:

There are a few reasons why getting SSDI benefits is complicated. The social security disability program is comprised of a complex set of procedures and requirements designed to filter out those claimants who are not deserving of benefits.

First off, proving you are too disabled to engage in any “substantial gainful activity” is very difficult. This determination has nothing to do with your prior income or experiences. It also has nothing to do with being able to perform a job close to your home.

To meet this determination, you have to prove that you are unable to do any type of job in the economy due to your medical condition. If you can not stand for long periods of time, it is presumed that you could perform a job where you have to sit. If you can not perform manual labor, it is presumed that you could work in an office or do administrative work.

Many people with legitimate medical conditions are denied SSDI benefits because they are unable to meet this segment of the requirements absent being afflicted with a condition listed under the Social Security Department's List of Impairments.

Second, a lot of paperwork is required to process a claim for SSDI benefits. Doctors offices and medical providers have to send in copies of medical records, you have to submit proper documentation or otherwise get the documents to the Social Security office before a decision can be made. If anyone delays in sending the paperwork or the paperwork is not available, then it takes more time to get the benefits.

Finally, after a long processing period few people are approved for SSDI benefits.
