Question:

I have a liver disorder. How can I be entitled to disability checks from the government?

Answer:

There are more than 20 different diseases that afflict the liver, and these diseases range from mild to severe. Liver disease can result in your liver shutting down or not functioning properly, and at times liver disease can also result in death. However, not every case of liver disease or every type of liver disease is this severe. Therefore, to determine if you can qualify for disability checks from the government based on your liver condition, you need to understand the rules.

The government body that would send you checks for your liver disease, if you are eligible, is the Social Security Administration. These benefits will come from their SSDI, or social security disability insurance, program. Whether or not you will be eligible for liver disease disability is thus determined under SSA rules.

In particular, SSA section 5.05 of the Blue Book listing of impairments addresses various liver diseases. This section of the SSA listing, which also addresses other various digestive disorders, explains exactly what criteria your particular liver condition must meet in order to qualify you for benefits. While each different type of liver disease may have different rules, as a general matter, the SSA will require

  • That your condition persist or be expected to persist for 12 or more months. The SSA doesn't offer short term benefits
  • That your condition be severe enough that it significantly affects your life and makes you unable to work

To get help determining if your particular liver condition will fall within these regulations, or for other assistance in making a disability claim with the SSA, you should strongly consider speaking with an attorney for advice.
