Question:

How do I start my disability claim?

Answer:

SSDI disability claims are made when you become disabled and unable to work as a result of that disability. The best way to start your disability claim is to get a lawyer to help you. Your lawyer can guide you through all of the appropriate steps in the process.

The steps in the process of filing a disability claim include:

  • Getting a diagnosis of a disability that renders you unable to work. You will need this medical evidence to prove that you are really legitimately disabled. If your disability is listed on the SSA blue book of impairments or list of benefits, you'll have an easier time proving your claim. If it is not, you'll need even more medical evidence to be able to prove that your disability should be covered
  • Completing an application for SSDI benefits. The application can be obtained from your local social security disability benefits office. Information about the SSA office near you and the application can also be found at the Social Security Administration website
  • Submit all the required paperwork and documentation with your claim, including your medical records as well as proof of your identity and your work history.

Once the SSA receives the paperwork and application, the review process will begin. You may need to speak with or meet with a claims administrator, and you may also need to undergo a medical examination or submit additional information as requested. During this entire process, it is advisable that you have a lawyer on your side so he can assist you throughout each step of the application and help to maximize your chances of successfully getting benefits.
