Question:

My child was approved for social security disability insurance. How can I figure out how much it will be?

Answer:

Maneuvering through the Social Security system is a challenge. It is only matched by obtaining successfully social security disability insurance (SSDI) for your child. The child, therefore, must qualify in one of these three basic categories:

  • Less than 18 with a disability in a home with a limited amount of resources and income
  • Less than 18 and possessed of restricted sources and income
  • Children less than 18 (or between 18 and 19 and a full-time student) without disabilities living in a home where the disabled parents or adults currently collecting social security (SS) or social security disability insurance (SSDI)

In order for the adult to receive SSDI, he or she will have worked long enough to be eligible for the benefits. This will provide the child with a benchmark to discover what SSDI amounts he or she will receive.

SSDI Amounts

In order to figure out how much the child will receive, you need to know the SSDI amounts the adult receives. In general, the child will receive approximately half of this amount. It may be less than this, but rarely is more than 50% of the amount the disabled worker is receiving. If the child is disabled, the amount he or she receives will depend upon various factors. These will include:

  • The total income the parents or adult receives
  • The family assets
  • The severity of the child’s disability

Consult A Lawyer

A qualified attorney can help you determine what your child should receive. He or she understands the machinations of the SSDI in deciding the set amount. If necessary, the attorney will help you appeal the amount your child receives.
