Disability Determination Services, which are funded by the federal government, are state agencies responsible for analyzing medical records and making the initial determination regarding whether or not the claimant is disabled or blind under the law. Initially, the DDS obtains information from the claimant’s own medical providers. If this evidence is not sufficient enough to make a determination, the DDS will arrange for a consultative examination from the claimant’s treating physician. If this is not possible, the DDS may obtain the consultative examination from an independent source. After reviewing all the information, the DDS will make its initial determination. For more information, consult an attorney experienced in short term disability law.
