I suffer from severe depression which makes it too difficult for me to go to work. I need to be able to qualify for some type of disability so I can support myself and pay for my medication and stuff. Are there any disability benefits for depression and what do I need to go do get them if there are?

Determining whether there are disability benefits available for depression depends on how severe your depression is. Social Security disability does provide benefits and protection from those who suffer from depression, but the decision is made on a case by case basis. The Social Security Administration will evaluate how your depression affects your daily life to determine whether it is severe enough to qualify you for disability benefits. Generally, your depression must be severe enough to severely hinder or affect your ability to function on a day to day basis. The SSA may wish to receive a daily schedule from you so they can see how you are affected, and may also require you to undergo a mental status exam with an approved physician. It may be advisable to speak with an experienced social security disability attorney who can help you to determine whether your depression is severe enough to qualify, and who can help you put together an application to convince social security of the severity of your disability and the right to your benefits.
