My son was born mentally retarded. He is 4 now, and he is completely unable to function. He needs to be bathed, dressed and otherwise cared for in every way. My husband recently lost his job and I have never worked and now we don’t have any money and we can’t really even afford the care he needs. Can my son get child disability mental retardation benefits, is there such a thing?

There are benefits available to disabled children from the Social Security Administration, although there are no specific child disability mental retardation benefits. However, if your child qualifies as disabled- and it is likely that he will since you described his level of impairment a very high- then he may be eligible for supplemental security income (SSI) on the basis of the fact he is disabled. To qualify for SSI, not only must the child be disabled, but also the income of the family must be at or below a certain level. Since no one is working in your family at this time, it is very likely that the income is below that level and that your son will qualify. You should speak with an experienced social security disability attorney who can help you determine whether you are entitled to benefits and how to go about getting those benefits.
