Disabled children are not automatically entitled to or eligible for disability benefits. In fact, social security disability benefits are only available for those who are over 18 years of age and who have worked for a qualified length of time. Children who are disabled, on the other hand, are eligible only to receive supplemental security income. While children can qualify for these SSI benefits on the basis of being disabled, being disabled is not the only criteria. The family income also must be below a certain level, depending on the number of individuals in the family. If your family makes a good income, your child may not qualify for any benefits at this time. If, however, your family income is at or below the mandated levels, you should speak with a qualified disability attorney who can help your child apply for the benefits available.
