Supplemental Security Income (ssi)

Supplementary Income Security (SSI) is a term describing the type of additional income available for those under extreme financial conditions. The funds for this program come out of the United States Treasury funds. It is intended as a means of ensuring certain individuals have the money to meet their basic needs. Supplemental Income Security (SSI) is a financial program open only to those who meet certain strict criteria. Potential adult SSI recipients must be age 65 or older. He or she must fulfill several categories under financial requirements. A basic criterion is previous work history. An individual must have a minimum of 40 credits to apply. Income is another area closely perused by the grantors. They examine the applicant's Earned, Unearned (Social Security, Pensions, etc.), In-Kind and Deemed (spousal, parents if live with) income. The examiners also look at the resources available to the individual. These include their home, mortgage, insurance policy, burial fund records, car registration and other financially related items. A disabled or blind-child may also apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The child must be less than 18. She or he must either not be working or earn less than a set amount of money. The physical or mental disability must be severe with marked functional limitations. The disabled child must also have a condition that will affect them for more than a year and/or result in their death.
