Special Education Students

In 1975, the Federal Government of the United States enacted the Education for All Handicapped Children's Act. It gave the right for all children to receive an equal education. In 2004, the name of the act was changed. It became the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA. Under this act, special education students could receive the education they needed. Special Education students comprise those with special needs. These may be learning or physical disabilities. The special educational needs may envelop emotional, behavioral and developmental disorders. Special education students may attend inclusive, mainstreamed, segregated or excluded classes. The type of education they receive varies across the United States and from country to country. The ability to attend a special education class also has several variables. The school must make an assessment of the individual. If the result indicates the need for special needs education, the school looks at resources and goals. Resources include funding available from the Federal Department of Education. Special needs students may also be able to access other means of financial support. Parents may wish to consider applying for short-term or long-term disability insurance. Insurance is available at federal levels (long-term Social Security Disability Insurance) and state levels (short-term disability insurance).
