Representative Payee

A representative payee is a person who is appointed by the Social Security Administration to help those who need it to manage their benefit payments if they are unable to do so and do not have family to do so on their behalf. However, this person should be someone that cares for the well-being of the individual if at all possible. In situations where the Social Security Administration determines that a person is unable to handle his or her money, they will apply a representative payee (sometimes called a rep payee) to handle the money on behalf of the other person. At that time, the benefits are paid to that person who has the responsibility of caring for you.
