Long term disability benefits is a term used to describe any type of Social Security or other form of disability protection in which the benefits will last for a long period of time. Disability benefits from the Social Security Administration generally will last long term, assuming that the individual meets specific requirements. The Social Security Administration must approve the type of illness or disability. A doctor must formally diagnose the individual with disability as well in order to qualify. Individuals who believe that they may be eligible for long-term disability benefits must apply for them directly at an SSA office or online.
