Disability Claims Examiner

A Social Security Disability Claims Examiner generally works in tandem with the Disability Determination Service of the state where they live. The Federal Government funds these services, which are a very important part of the Social Security process. It is the Disability Claims Examiner and the Disability Determination Service, also known as the DDS, who makes the decision as to whether a person is disabled. The Disability Claims Examiner works as a team with either a medical doctor, a psychologist, or sometimes both of these people. Together, they decide if the medical records sent in to represent the claimant show that he or she is disabled. If they believe that they need additional records to make the decision, they are allowed to ask the claimant's doctor or other medical facility for them. After the DDS is done with a disability case, it goes to the State Field Office for further action. If a person is denied benefits, Social Security sends out a denial letter and keeps the information in case the claimant appeals the decision. If disability benefits are approved, Social Security will figure the amount of the benefit, then will either issue the check or initiate the direct deposit.

Fast Facts

  • Many people prefer Direct Deposit for their Social Security Disability Checks. The money is placed into a previously opened bank checking account, and is always deposited on time.
  • Direct Deposit also eliminates the problem of disability checks disappearing from mailboxes and being snatched and stolen from seniors.
