Cancer

It is a sad but true fact that cancer has affected almost every family in the United States in one way or another. When the family wage earner is stricken with cancer and unable to work, spouses and children will suffer right along with him or her because there will be no money coming in. Luckily, those who have cancer and have worked during the last ten years have also paid Social Security taxes. This means that they are more than likely eligible to draw a monthly Social Security disability benefit. If you are not able to do the type of work that you were doing before you found out you had cancer, and your doctors have stated that the disability caused by your cancer will last for at least 12 months or will result in your death, then Social Security Disability is for you. If you have cancer and were not gainfully employed, you may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI.

Fast Facts

  • SSDI and SSI can help you to provide your family with the basics of life, which are generally considered to be food, shelter, and clothing.
  • Those who are eligible for Supplemental Security Income may also be able to receive social services such as food stamps and Medicaid.
